Steam Training At Pickering Station
Are you interested in steam engines? Or maybe you would like to be involved in a charity that exists to bring the experience and excitement of past rail travel to today’s generation?
The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is looking for volunteers to help with the running of the railway and is having an Open Day at Pickering Station soon (13 April) to show potential new recruits what opportunities are on offer.
Volunteering can offer you the chance to meet new people, gain useful skills and a real sense of achievement. Areas that you can volunteer in are surprisingly wide-ranging, including: operations, locomotive footplate, engineering, infrastructure, signaling and telecommunications, catering, education, customer services, retail sales, marketing and administration.

The Trust says: We are always looking for interested people who can spare some time. There is a wide range of volunteering opportunities available, covering virtually every aspect of the Railway’s activities. Whilst some roles require a significant time commitment, others do not. If you want to get your hands dirty, there are plenty of opportunities, but if manual work is not for you, there is also a wide range of choices.
If you are interested in getting involved, you will need to register in advance of the Open Day by visiting www.nymr.net or calling 01751 472508. All ages are welcome (though there is a waiting list for junior volunteers), along with both families and individuals. This could be the ideal activity for anyone with some time to spare and a love of trains.
