Pocklington Art, Cheese & Wine
Art, food, drink and art all at the same time – it’s the perfect evening for some of us, and if that includes you, read on to find out about Pocklington’s latest art club
When you find a small business that is based in north London, but has an equally active partner in Pocklington, it’s something of a conundrum. A little further investigation quickly reveals the link between the two locations is one Ed Sumner, professional artist and one time Pocklington resident. After a period studying art in Liverpool, Ed moved to London, but still has family ties in East Yorkshire and is often in the area. Now he is the host and tutor of The Cheese and Wine Painting Club, an English take on the popular US concept, Cocktails and Canvas, which as both names suggest is an enjoyable way to take a painting class in a relaxed and enjoyable environment.
With Pocklington Arts Centre as a venue and Sarah Green, a local art teacher, and Ed acting as tutors, the club has received a warm welcome in Pocklington and delighted students have produced amazing versions of Monet’s The Water Lily Pond, Picasso’s The Roaster and Van Gogh’s The Starry Night and Sunflowers. November’s class is tackling Garrowby Hill, the 1998 painting by David Hockney, so whilst you may not be able to have the original at home, you can produce your own version. Of course, once you have done that, you would have to take a trip along the A166 and check out just how accurate that view really is, though it certainly wasn’t painted in November colours.
One of the best things about these events is that all the equipment is provided, so there’s no heading out to buy a long list of art supplies, before you know that this activity is for you. In addition, you don’t need to be an accomplished painter to join in, in fact you need no experience whatsoever, just a desire to give it a go and have fun. It’s also in a great location in the newly refurbished Pocklington Arts Centre, with free parking right outside the front door. So how do you sign up, you ask? Head to www.cheeseandwinepaintingclub.com where you can book a session and admire the artwork from previous sessions. Who knows? This could be the start of a whole new pastime, maybe you’ll be taking part in East Yorkshire Open Studios in a few years’ time and if not you will certainly have had an enjoyable evening, complete with cheese and wine.
